What is Psychotherapy?

What is Psychotherapy?
If your imagination goes to the age-old image of someone lying on a couch while a man with a notepad sitting *just* out of view asks you about your mother, have no fear!
Psychotherapy; talk therapy; counselling; the terms can be used interchangeably. At its most basic level, psychotherapy is a way for people to work through challenges that go along with being human. This can include life changes, relationship difficulties, stress, trauma, anxiety and other mental health conditions, grief and loss, emotional regulation—you name it. It involves building trust and relationship with someone who is trained to listen and have supportive conversations with you. You might have one-on-one conversations (and yes, there may be a couch present), or you may meet with a therapist along with a partner, or with your family, or perhaps you’ll attend therapy as part of a group. Psychotherapy is an option for those of all ages, ranging from young children to older adults.
Ultimately, the function of psychotherapy is to help people experience healing where it’s needed, and to increase a sense of well-being in their lives. It is a resource available to help you wherever you’re needing help—regardless of whether that involves talking about your mother or not!
